She Became Germany's Conscience
By Ahmet Özay
German Foreign Minister Wolfgang Wadephul gave a speech in the Bundestag about his America visit. In response, Turkish-origin MP Cansin Köktürk attended the session wearing a t-shirt with 'Palestine' written on it.
Köktürk was expelled from the session due to the t-shirt - a first in German parliamentary history.
Expelled from the Hall
Parliament Speaker Julia Klöckner demanded: 'Ms. Köktürk, you cannot be in the session with clothing containing political messages. Please leave the parliament.'
Police Intervened
Some German spectators supported Köktürk shouting 'Free Palestine'. Protesting spectators were forcibly removed from the galleries by security forces.
Who is Köktürk?
Cansin Köktürk was born on June 13, 1993 in Hattingen to a Turkish-origin family. She grew up in Bochum, studied social work at Duisburg-Essen University and was elected to parliament as a Left Party member in 2025.
