Alliance Against AfD Won
By Ahmet Özay
The second round of local elections in Germany's most populous state North Rhine-Westphalia ended with the success of center-right and social democrats.
In the second round, the Greens lost major city mayoral positions such as Aachen and Bonn except for Münster.
Although the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) reached 15 percent in the first round, not a single candidate could be elected mayor against the conservative (CDU) - left (SPD) block.
SPD candidate Torsten Burmester was elected the new mayor of Cologne with 53.55% of the votes.
Although the AfD could not win mayoral positions in major cities, it reached 25-35 percent in some areas. This shows that the AfD has become a significant force not only in East Germany but also in West German metropolises.
